3 good reasons not to choose an executive candidate

When you embark on an executive hiring mission, it's only natural to have your eyes on the prize, focusing mostly on what you want to see in a candidate. However, it can be helpful to keep what you don't want to see in mind as well. This will help you narrow the field of candidates by catching on to red flags before they become a problem for your company's bottom line.

For example, one red flag to look out for is if the candidate fails to follow the directions you provide in your communications. If you request that they bring several copies of their resume and they only bring one, or if you give clear directions to your office and they still have to call the front desk to find their way, it might mean they're not paying attention because they're not truly invested in the opportunity.

Another good reason not to hire a candidate is if they seem overly fixated on money. Most executive candidates are looking for a venue to learn and grow in their careers, not just a salary. According to executive recruiters, "Money-obsessed executives have trouble leading and inspiring teams to new heights. They become as fungible as money itself."

Finally, if your favorite candidate suddenly falls silent during the interview process, it could be a sign they're in talks with another company. Even if they're not, you shouldn't let unresponsive candidates slow down the interview process, especially if it would cause you to lose out on equally good candidates.
