3 questions to ask yourself before making an executive hire

When you're looking for a new executive to lead your business forward, it's important to look not only for someone who's known as a top CEO in general, but for someone who is truly a good fit for your particular organization. A one-size-fits-all strategy certainly doesn't work in executive recruiting, which is why at YES Partners, we customize our executive search to your particular needs. However, before you even consult an executive search firm, you need to know what your company needs in an executive.

Executive search firm founder Greg Lamboy recommends asking these three questions before engaging a search firm:

  • Where is your company now? In order to know how to move forward, you have to have a solid, clear idea of your company's role in your industry and its current level of success.
  • Where do you want to go from here? What are your organization's next steps in its progression? Consult your company's one, two and five-year plans, if you have them, and determine what kind of person would be most able to take your organization where it needs to go.
  • How do you get there? According to Lamboy, it's important to "hire for the future" rather than sticking to past patterns of hiring. You need someone who will be able to move your organization forward, not someone who would have been at home at your organization in past years. Come up with a few specific steps you will want the new executive to take once he or she is hired and use these to guide your hiring choices.

Finding people is easy, but finding the RIGHT people is not. YES Partners helps companies FIND the right people – for all company functions, across many industries and globally.
