The pressures of innovation on the 2014 executive

Keeping pace with innovation can be a driving force behind your business's activity, and not necessarily in a good way. In an article entitled "Five Priorities for the Modern CEO," Tim Pawlenty of the Financial Services Roundtable and former governor of Minnesota discusses the pressure of innovation that drives production and performance in the market today.

The first two concerns on the list are the effects that businesses might experience from this drive for innovation. Pawlenty notes that the importance of innovation today can manifest itself in different ways and requires any self-respecting CEO to be mindful of how to strive toward improvement without overextending the company or its abilities.

This pressure is something that Steve Ballmer, the recently departed CEO of Microsoft, might know. In an interview with Forbes, he recently fingered the squandered chance to innovate as one of his biggest regrets from his CEO tenure.

"It was almost magical the way the PC came about with an operating system from us and hardware from IBM," Ballmer said. "But if you really want to bring a vision to market, it's helpful to be able to conceive and deliver the hardware and software."

Innovation is more than a matter of vision: It also requires the courage to drive a business into uncertain territory while maintaining stability. As these examples suggest, this is a very specific skill set only seen in a relative few. By consulting one of the top retained search firms, your business can give itself the chance to excel and grow.
