Are we still living in the era of the ‘young CEO?’

Recently, Forbes published an article examining what it calls "America's Most Powerful CEOs" who are younger than age 40. Seeing the amount of attention that has been paid to young people in today's internet-driven society, your company might be interested in turning to some of these well-known figures as models during an executive search. However, quality and CEO experience should still be taken into consideration.

Some of the CEOs that the source looks at are among the most visible and discussed in the world of American commerce. Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Yahoo's Marissa Mayer, who have both been regularly discussed on this site, are near the top of the list, and the person in the number one spot is Larry Page of Google, who is exactly 40.

Almost all of the executives mentioned are in their 30's, with the only younger person being Zuckerberg at 29. The next youngest is Daniel Schwartz of Burger King at 33.

The younger members of society are clearly seen as more connected to the rise of the internet, having grown up with it and being the target audience for much of its innovations. And the presence of such youth in areas of corporate power also potentially encourages further generations to succeed, as Jason Bays writes for the Purdue Exponent.

"Many of the CEOs that run online services became successful at a young age and serve as an inspiration to students pursuing a career in technology," Bays writes.

Perhaps it's more important, then, to choose the CEO that is most in step with your company's particular service. That way, their CEO tenure fits with the evolution of your business and industry. Part of the reason Zuckerberg is so well-known is that his rise parallels that of the internet and social media.

With an executive recruiter to advise you, your business can find the right CEO for your company and the image it wishes to project.
