Do you have a core criteria checklist for hiring candidates?

What is the most important thing that your company needs for its next executive hire? What about the second most important? Answering these questions will help you look at every potential candidate with a more focused perspective. If you take the time to work with an executive recruitment consultant and come up with a list of criteria, your search will be even more tailored and productive.

Writing for ERE.net, recruiter Morgan Hoogvelt identifies four traits that he believes define a quality hire: culture fit, productivity, impact and tenure. Hoogvelt also says that successful candidates are specific about the ways they create an impact, showing how they have performed in the past and why they deserve the position now. A potential executive should similarly be able to clearly explain his or her value proposition when a recruiter asks.

"In executive search, I have always asked candidates for their top two greatest professional achievements that made an impact — how much money they saved the company, systems they implemented on time and under budget, process they streamlined or saved time, etc.," he writes.

Identifying the universal characteristics that your business needs in its c-level staff will give you a solid starting place from which you can add other important, more customized trait requirements, specific to the open position. If your business is a startup, for example, you can include qualities that pertain to developing a business and taking it through to full funding rather than simply maintaining its current position in the market.

An experienced consultant can help you locate candidates whose executive experience aligns with your particular business needs.
