Google data shows lack of diversity within workforce

Diversity is an important goal for organizations. Hiring an executive who prioritizes it as one of their CEO responsibilities can support related efforts.

One company that's coming to grips with this is Google. Data recently presented on its website show a marked need to improve the diversity in its hiring strategy, with more than 60 percent of the workforce recorded as white and 70 percent listed as male. Google's Laszlo Bock authored the post, admitting that the company is "not where we want to be" in a humbling moment for the organization.

What's more, The New York Times noted that this news has not been accompanied by any real assurance that Google will do anything to try and improve its standing in this area, making the revelation of this data seem somewhat unanchored to any progress.

However, the fact that the company has chosen to voluntarily disclose this information might set the stage for similar admissions from other businesses. Writing for Fortune, Caroline Fairchild quotes from Telle Whitney of the Anita Borg Institute on this aspect of the announcement.

"The whole world will be watching and expecting this to get better," Whitney said. "This will put pressure on their peers to release their numbers. There is no question."

Finding c-level staff who are committed to, and capable of, encouraging diversity is a valuable goal. Making the right decisions and being more organized in a search can be products of the successful use of professional recruiters, and these traits can be helpful in selecting someone with similar goals.
