Meeting the new boss: Power shifts in the case of an acquisition

Companies can merge in different ways, and the circumstances surrounding a deal may bring with them specific challenges for the leaders of those businesses to deal with. This is especially true for those who already have firmly established forms of leadership.

That's probably not the first thing most people thought of when they read the headline news about Google acquiring robotics manufacturer Boston Dynamics, famous for developing the four-legged "big dog" robot for DARPA, as well as other models like the super-fast "Cheetah."

These projects fall into the same category as previous "moonshot" ideas mentioned by the company, like self-driving cars and other big ideas that could be the "way of the future" or a frivolous waste of time and money.

But when your business is moving into the hands of a very large, powerful and well-established company, then you have to count on having a boss that will respond to this with the proper knowledge that comes from successful executive experience. This is significant when there are visible means of competition, like Amazon's own announcement that it will be using drones, as mentioned by the Financial Times.

In other cases, newly combined companies may need to look for a new leader. If your business is looking ahead to a possible acquisition and considering your options for a new CEO, then you can invest in an executive recruitment service ahead of time to look for the kind of mature candidate that is prepared to handle delicate situations that may come to light after the deal is done.

It might be an overlooked aspect of this major deal due to Google's established leadership team, but you should still take this lesson to heart.
