Multiple major retail chains search for new CEO

In the wake of the recent Target security breach, the technical expertise of the CEO of a major chain of store might be considered more valuable than one who doesn't know this area. But The Wall Street Journal has reported that this isn't the only chain looking for someone to take the helm: Other big names in the same sector, including J.C. Penney and American Eagle, are also currently in the market for new leadership, albeit for different reasons.

The source notes that what all three seem to have in common is the need for a c-level staff member with new ideas that can steer these well-known brands into the future. J. C. Penney, for example, is still looking to recover from the relative failure it experienced under the leadership of its previous CEO, Ron Johnson.

The article notes that one of the issues facing these companies is the difficulty in finding a single person who has the different skill sets that are needed to handle all of the various ways that the company does business.

Writing for Forbes, Laura Pomerantz notes that board members are important influences when it comes to the needs of a retailer's physical brick-and-mortar stores, and that companies need to figure out for themselves how best to scale the space available to them.

"Investors are demanding that retailers reassess their real estate to maximize their space, and we're finding that as they do so, there is no longer a one size fits all model," Pomerantz writes.

This situation requires finesse and understanding on the part of the business. Finding someone with the right CEO experience to make these judgments may be difficult, but it is vital to have this person onboard to ensure that the company moves in a direction that helps all of its related outlets and projects develop.
