Reading faces in interviews

Professional executive recruitment specialists have an informed and knowledgeable idea of what to look for when it comes to little quirks of behavior that might show up during the hiring process. One of the benefits of executive recruiters is that they notice details like this that you might otherwise miss.

Writing for Forbes, David Stuart and Todd Nordstrom recently interviewed hiring expert Arte Nathan on the importance of something that might seem somewhat unimportant: a person's smile. While it's not exactly scientific, it's part of what led Nathan to recruit people who, he said, had the right attitude on a day-to-day basis.

The term Nathan used was "already smiling," meaning that the best candidates clearly express all of the positive qualities that a company finds attractive right from the start.

"A lot of companies will claim that they hire for attitude and train for skill," Nathan told the publication. "But, most still place too much weight on what's on the paper instead of who is standing in front of them—a person who [is] saying 'I want to contribute my time, effort, energy and talent to the company.'"

This principle is important to consider even before the interview: An executive needs to embody certain characteristics that are not easily translated onto a piece of paper or by set of technical skills. An executive recruiter can help you find qualified individuals who have both the acumen and the temperament to lead your organization.
