Satya Nadella to be new CEO of Microsoft

After months of speculation, announcements and false leads, the much-discussed race for the successor to Microsoft's Steve Ballmer has concluded. The new CEO for the international electronics and computing company will be Satya Nadella, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Before the official announcement had been made, there was speculation that Nadella might indeed be the one chosen, based on the more than 20 years that he has held a position within Microsoft. Sadella may be thought to have gradually accumulated executive experience over the course of this time, making him an already-vetted candidate who is more likely to deliver results.

CNet quoted Ted Schadler, a representative from the research group Forrester, on all the positive qualities that 46-year-old Sadella might bring to his new position. Anyone filling such large shoes might feel the pressure, but because Sadella is taking the helm of such a large company, the stress is on him to keep profitability high in Ballmer's absence.

"Satya Nadella is a tough, number-driven leader," Schadler said. "He is a visionary, has passion for change, is making it happen, and knows what it takes to drive change in the unique Microsoft culture."

Although in this case, the candidate was found inside the company and clearly had an advantage because of this fact, there are other situations where a company this big won't have the time to conduct its own global executive search.

Businesses don't have to feel like they're giving something up by handing this job over to a qualified global executive search firm: in fact, they could be learning something new by doing so.
