Selecting a CFO to help change your organization

The CFO does more than just act as a financial leader within your organization: he or she has the chance to help bring about change, a crucial function as economic conditions fluctuate. As the business reacts to new financial realities, the CFO can act as a sort of translator for others to understand the right path forward and be more involved in the company's strategy. At the same time, this person will also be useful in communicating with important business figures outside the company as situations evolve.

From an executive search standpoint, this means that businesses can look for candidates who show a history of adapting to new workplaces. Similarly, a company situated within one environment may want outside voices to switch up current practices through their specific experiences and skill set. A great CFO is not only an administrator or "bean-counter,"  but rather someone who proactively evaluates and helps all departments.

The Wall Street Journal chronicled an example of this in a recent article about the CFOs migrating to Silicon Valley companies. According to the source, many major players in tech, including Google, Airbnb and Twitter, have all turned to experts from the world of finance to join their team, regardless of what the company specializes in.

On the CFO's side, the source notes that finance officers are benefiting from the security and potential for growth in tech, as opposed to other finance firms. In both Google and Airbnb's case, the CFO chosen was the best match for what each company needed from its finance team at that time.
