Timing is everything when it comes to ‘executive shuffles’

Timing is everything. A shift in power at your company could indicate either a tumultuous time or simply the dawn of a new era. It all depends on the nature of the departing c-level staff members and the steps your company is taking to counteract this.

One recent high-profile example demonstrates how a change in the balance of power needs to be coordinated smoothly to ensure stability. Software company SAP has been in the news for the departure of Vishal Sikka, one of the key developers involved with its HANA system, a major focus of the company's future business plans.

In addition to this much-publicized departure, Forbes' Ben Krepes also recently commented on the loss of Shawn Price, who was temporarily heading the cloud business section of that company. Because these individuals were both connected with aspects of the business that concern its future plans, the loss seems somewhat chaotic, especially to Krepes, who called it "carnage."

A Wall Street Journal piece on the shake-up quoted analyst Rick Sherlund from a piece in CIO Journal. Sherlund's take on the situation reflects the kind of attitude that concerned outsiders might easily develop in the face of such changes, when it can seem that the whole foundation of the company's mission is in question.

"It's going to take some convincing to know they haven't lost their culture of innovation and driving engine as they try to commercialize a lot of this technology," Sherlund said of SAP.

Using an executive recruiter can help streamline the process of hiring and planning during sensitive transition periods. Your business can therefore keep the focus on the future productivity your company might see rather than the temporary setbacks that might befall it.
