Transition the ‘general manager’ into a CEO

The way your company organizes candidates for higher positions with an executive search consultant could dictate the way the business grows as a whole. According to Dr. Thomas Saporito of Chief Executive, this trend can be seen in the way that the general manager position is being perceived in the workplace today.

Saporito says that the general manager position, though not especially common, works as a good testing ground for candidates within the company as they evolve and develop their executive leadership skills. He describes it as a means of honing possible CEOs into effective workers who can head the company by giving them just enough responsibility to prove themselves.

As an example, he quotes Denise Morrison, current head of Campbell Soup Company, who agrees that general managers can demonstrate their abilities to lead and then "graduate" to the c-level staff afterwards.

"The general manager position is an excellent stepping stone for advancement to the senior executive ranks," she said. "It provides a solid foundation for the next phase of intense development and experience necessary to fully prepare individuals for the C-suite."

By placing someone in this intermediate role and then giving them the clear tools to progress, businesses are taking initiative and setting a clear path for the future. Not everyone will learn to grow during this process, but an executive search consultant will help your company find a general manager who will be productive in both the short and the long term. It will also help you identify other ways of structuring the executive positions in your enterprise so that everyone ends up doing their best.
