What top executives look for in a company

If you're seeking a new executive to head your business, you've probably been thinking what your company needs in a leader. But have you taken time to think about what these leaders will be looking for in a company?

In order to recruit the best talent for your team, you have to be aware of what executives want. These are some of the most common factors mentioned by executive candidates when asked what would influence their decision to take or leave a job offer:

  • Opportunity for personal growth. People who've made it all the way up the organizational ladder don't stop looking for ways to advance once they get that corner office. On the contrary, the type of executive you should be looking to hire will want to continue gaining new skills and knowledge in their role.
  • Pay above market rate. As Mark Wayman writes for Huffington Post Business, "Top executives work for companies that pay ABOVE market rate. Not at market rate or below market rate, ABOVE market rate. If you are 20% below the market, you won't be hiring anyone good."
  • Reputation and future prospects. Both a company's history and its potential for future growth play into executives' job decisions. After all, no one wants to be the head of a notoriously bad company or the captain of a sinking ship. "Executives want to work for a winning company, or a company that is poised to be the 'next Google,'" one consultant told Huffington Post Business.
