Do you need a CIO or a ‘CIO-plus?’

Finding the best candidate for an executive position means matching him or her to the tasks you need accomplished, which could vary greatly from other companies. Just because a person holds a particular title doesn't mean that he or she will only complete the standard tasks associated with that job. In fact, one title might not even be enough for all of the work he or she has to do.

Writing for CIO, Julia King addresses the situation of executives with "CIO-plus" jobs, situations where Chief Information Officers takes on responsibilities beyond their typical role. As the source notes, this kind of position has been around for some time, but is gaining new prominence as executives with IT experience are forced to develop other skills to adapt to different teams.

To accurately reflect their work, some CIOs might seek out entirely novel titles to define themselves and encompass their newer skills and areas of expertise. Praveen Chopra may be one such person. At Jefferson Health, he is the Executive Vice President, Chief Information and Transformative Innovative Environment Officer and, as he told CIO Insight recently, he might be the only person with that exact title.

"I oversee areas such as technology innovation and consumer experience, data sciences, business partnering and portfolio management in addition to traditional information technology functions," he said. "In this role, I see us building a health care organization of the future. This forward-thinking organization leverages the power of the digital enterprise in a fundamentally different way and creates an innovation driven ecosystem."

With a retained executive search firm, businesses are free to create the executive board that they want, hiring based on ability even if the position needs to change.
