Fire departments prioritize rapid response in job candidates

How discriminating are you when it comes to the speed with which applicants respond during the interview process? The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reportedly puts a strong emphasis on how soon application materials are received after posting an open position.

According to the Los Angeles Times, this method, of giving preference to applicants who submitted their required physical fitness test results sooner than others, was divisive for some, because the candidates didn't know that the Fire Department would be employing these tactics in the process.

Although it might seem a little underhanded to hire this way, the city is apparently under a lot of pressure to find members to take these positions quickly due to the additional strain that budget cuts have placed on the LAFD.

The Los Angeles Daily News quoted James Featherstone, the area's Fire Chief, from an interaction with the city council on the urgency of employing new blood sooner rather than later.

"We are not looking back at how we got here today, but what we can do about it," Featherstone said. "We need to hire more people. We can't fill our vacancies without more bodies. At a certain point, it becomes a safety issue."
