Looking for a CEO who will give your company the time it deserves

Traditional business structures are being reshaped by the state of the economy and the availability of workers. Some industries are increasingly turning to freelancers, part-time employees and flexible work weeks to fill out their ranks: Could this sort of flexible scheduling apply to CEOs next?

Some seem to think so, like Sarah Sutton Fell, the founder of a telecommuting job search company called FlexJobs. In a piece for Recruiting Trends, Fell describes the way that executives in this model operate, compared to the more traditional full-time executive. She cites information from a recent study that examined the way 50 different U.K. CEOs operate.

"Some work compressed work-weeks in four days, taking Fridays off," Sutton Fell writes. "Others truly work part-time, being on-the-job for three days each week and off (but reachable) for the remaining four."

It's important to understand that this doesn't necessarily mean that this is the right approach for every business, and some companies need the attention of c-level staff who work regular hours.

An article in the Australian Financial Review quoted Alison Maitland, who wrote a piece cited by Sutton Fell, on the way that distinctions between the amount of working hours could ultimately be arbitrary and not actually help in any improvement. "It is not about the hours," Maitland says.

Although the time that any executive spends at work can be important, it's also necessary to measure the quality of their performance by looking at their actual output. No matter how long they stay behind a desk, this should be the deciding factor. Using a global executive search firm can help you figure out exactly what makes a person the ideal candidate.
