Passionate CEOs make for the best leaders

An article in Chief Executive by Ray Attiyah looks at the need for enthusiasm in the c-level suite. On the surface, passion seems like a straightforward quality for a CEO to have, but Attiyah says there are actually several traits that make a truly passionate CEO, all of which are things global executive search firms look for. What's more, he argues that businesses should be led not just by enthusiastic people, but by "superfans" of the company.

But what makes a "superfan" level of enthusiasm? According to Attiyah, enthusiasm comes from loyalty, engagement and commitment in a chief executive, signs that they are invested in the outcome of the business and doing their best to make others feel that too. Most importantly, this requires a personal touch and a sense of humor that connects the executive directly to fellow employees.

"Display your passion by meeting one-on-one with your leadership team members and face-to-face with your employees in general," Attiyah advises CEOs. "Get out in the field often and get to know the people who work for you. Feel their pride in and passion for the work they do, and then carry that feeling to others."

Once again, a classic example of this outlook is Steve Jobs's behavior at Apple. Although he has become a business icon, an article in Computer World also commented on Jobs' enthusiasm for mentoring others and his genuine excitement and awe in the face of technology.

This level of devotion should be part of every company, and the effect is always stronger when the person with the most enthusiasm is the head of the company. With a "superfan" at the top, all of the other employees will have a solid example to follow.
