The Chief Security Officer should focus on fighting new threats

In recent years, the media has highlighted the IT security threats faced by companies of all sizes. The only thing more apparent than the growing danger internet attackers pose is the rate at which their methods change. However, by paying close attention, a security executive can keep up with changes by implementing a workable set of goals designed to help mitigate security risks.

CIO recently asked several CSOs and other safety-minded IT professionals what they are "wishing for" as the year comes to a close. Some of the professionals listed said they wanted to see better transparency and more time for testing software. James Beeson of GE Capital Americas said he personally "wishes" for innovation to keep his company from falling victim to new threats.

This last quality is important because it underscores the need for businesses to keep up with emerging threats and the solutions needed to counter them. Beeson described the new methods he and his organization have been moving toward.

"The bad guys are extremely innovative and creative!" he said. "We need to become much more innovative and think 10 times improvement, not 10 percent. We are working to leverage things like big data analytics and automation to quickly detect, alert and respond to anomalies in our environment. This also gives us improved intelligence to strengthen prevention."

Although looking forward is an important aspect of the IT security professional, their background is just as significant. Businesses need to reach out to candidates with a proven competency in helping their company stay connected to important new online security trends.

An executive search firm is a good resource for your company when trying to fill this position because it will look for individuals who have updated their past employer's security solutions and helped drive innovation.
