HR and the CEO: A natural match

Although the relationship between human resources and the c-level staff might not be readily apparent, it's an important connection that can help businesses locate their next executive. A recent leadership development article written for the Harvard Business Review specifically looked at the role of the Chief Human Resources Officer, and how HR is linked with chief executive duties and styles.

Citing information from Ellie Filler and professor Dave Ulrich, the article points to similarities between CHROs and CEOs based on their emotional competencies, leadership and thinking styles. These authors looked at how six different types of c-level positions, including the CHRO and CEO, rank for different descriptors.

Like the CEO, the CHRO tended to rank high when it came to showing empathy, participation and social leadership. As a result, the authors say that HR professionals are undervalued in the world of corporate leadership.

One supporter of this theory is Bernard Fontana, a CEO for a Swiss cement company. Fontana previously served as CHRO for another business, and in an interview included with this article, he told the source about how his HR experience influenced him.

"Leadership is about transforming an institution, and if you want to have a sustainable transformation, you need to develop leaders who will continue the journey after you," he said. "HR is an essential part of that kind of generative leadership."

Even if your CEO doesn't have direct experience in HR they can surround themselves with people who do or appoint their own CHRO to help improve their corporate culture. With the right management, these professionals can help an organization carry out key functions through tailored strategies and techniques.
