The “new scorecard” driving innovative CTOs

As technology has become ingrained in the fabric of many companies' all-important data collection and analytics processes, IT departments around the world have begun to take on new responsibilities. In response, the c-level staff leading them have had to adapt as well.

Now more than ever, according to a new Business Performance and Innovation (BPI) Network survey, global managers believe technology has become "far more important" to their business. Despite this reliance on effective IT, however, less than half (47 percent) of the 250 executives polled rated the level of innovation in their IT groups as good or very high. This gap marks a demand for a new breed of chief technology officer, one who prioritizes innovation, agility and problem solving in addition to the more traditional goals of solving incidents quickly and effectively.

The new BPI Network study, "Accelerating Business Transformation Through IT Innovation: Getting the Business Leader Take on the IT Change Mandate," suggests that business leaders are creating a new scorecard for IT organizations, focusing on business innovation and growth as primary objectives for technology deployment and management.

"From the C-suite to operational units, senior managers are eager to see progress in implementing a broad range of technologies that increase their agility, improve customer experience and make their companies more competitive," Dave Murray, head of Thought Leadership at the BPI Network said in a press release. "We believe this constitutes a new scorecard for IT, with greater emphasis on IT's role in driving business growth and market differentiation."

When hiring a CTO who will drive success according to this new scorecard, look for candidates who see their roles in IT as crucial to the operation of the organization, rather than merely supportive. They won't be afraid to go outside of their comfort zones to make investments in new technology or to design a business solution of their own, even if it means changing a tried and true practice. Today's best CTOs are disruptors, and their energy could change the way you do business forever.

Working with a retained executive search firm can help your company identify CTO candidates with the drive to innovate and transform your organization's IT environment.
