These tech trends could impact your CTO hiring in 2016

Perhaps more than anyone else in your company's c-suite, the effectiveness of the chief technical officer (CTO) is greatly reliant on his or her ability to keep up with the latest industry trends. If you are looking to fill this role in 2016, its crucial you find a candidate who can not only prove proficiency with current best practices, but has a keen eye for the future of enterprise technology.

When screening your CTO candidates this year, consider grading them based on their understanding of the following trends that Michael Morton, CTO of Dell's Integration Cloud, Boomi, predicts will define virtualization and cloud technology in 2016.

Internet toll roads

According to Morton, telecommunications companies will soon charge businesses for streaming data over the internet much the same way that cellular providers charge consumers for their data use. This will force businesses to think critically about the data they send, deeming which elements are truly necessary. Morton says it will also require developers to re-architect applications to minimize the amount of data that flows over the internet and perhaps build data utilization monitoring tools to keep businesses from exceeding their data tier.

Gesture control

In the past, "gestures" have come to refer to the movements we make with our fingers on touch screen devices and trackpads. However, Morton says, 2016 will see this definition expand to cover voice, hand and body gestures that are increasingly used to activate commands.

"Eventually, no one will tolerate using a statistical integration tool or writing an integration process to obtain an answer for a question," says Morton. "When we move to voice, hand and body gestures, it will be up to the underlying software system to do the integration necessary to obtain the answer that can be delivered in a more progressive way."

Intelligence

With "smart" hardware becoming more commonplace, companies are going to be able to collect data from more sources than ever in 2016. To put information from all of these sources together, Morton says, business intelligence systems will take advantage of fast computational horsepower and gigabit networks, busting the door open on a new generation of intelligent tools and platforms.
