To make a good impression on candidates, the interview is key

According to a recent national survey from CareerBuilder, the in-person interview is the part of the hiring process that makes the biggest impression on job candidates. This means that especially when you're trying to hire a top executive, it's crucial to make sure that the interview makes a good impression on them.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents to CareerBuilder's survey said that the in-person interview was the most likely part of the application process to make them not want to take a job if they had a bad experience. Thirty-three percent said that if they had a bad experience interviewing with a company, they were likely to come away with a bad impression of the company as a whole.

According to CareerBuilder chief human resources officer Rosemary Haefner, "The interview experience is crucial to the hiring process, as it can not only influence a candidate's decision to accept a job offer, but candidates today are very vocal about their experience… candidates who have a poor interview experience are less likely to accept job offers with the company [and] apply to jobs with the company again, and are more likely to tell others about their negative experience, both in person and on social media, making it harder to recruit candidates moving forward."

This can also dramatically affect your bottom line, as another section of the survey showed that candidates were more likely to accept a lower salary offer from a company with a good reputation. In fact, 77 percent of respondents said that they would accept a salary 5 percent lower than what they expected if they got a good impression of the company during the hiring process.
