Watch your CEO stay focused without micromanaging

The candidate who is a "perfect fit" in a c-level role will above all be focused on the work they have to do to make your company a success. Having a dedicated plan centering around the company's mission shows that your CEO is seriously invested and takes performance seriously without micromanaging a situation and making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Writing for the Harvard Business Review, executive coach Muriel Wilkins identifies some of the dsiruptive things that micromanagers may be doing without even realizing it. The list includes traits that could be positive in some situations but may not work as well in others, such as overly focusing on important details and asking for constant updates from team members.

Instead of the small range "laser focus" that Wilkins mentions, it's a better idea to have a detailed plan laid out that makes all roles clear in an organization. George Usi, president of SacTech, recommends that CEOs think about a partnership in clear terms in a piece for CRN. This doesn't mean ignoring details so much as keeping a definite plan in mind during the course of the CEO tenure so everything proceeds as part of an overall strategy.

"There's no question that focus is important," Usi said. "If you have focus, if your partner has focus and you have focus on what you know is your long-term strategy within that partnership, then you have good leadership qualities."

Hire a competent executive who will fill the role well and exercise strong leadership with an appropriate attention to detail. As with a lot of managerial traits, it's all about finding the person with the best balance, and a management recruitment specialist will help refine the search for the perfect candidate.
