What you should be looking for in an executive, according to CEOs

It's no secret that a company's choice of executives dramatically impacts your corporate culture and your bottom line. However, it can be hard to figure out exactly which particular qualities you should be seeking during your executive search process. Of course, the majority of the decision depends on your particular company's needs, but there are a few overarching qualities that improve executives' performance no matter what industry they're in. Glassdoor recently surveyed some of the CEOs that were rated the highest in its latest list of top executives, determined by employee feedback. They had a few words to say on what characteristics have helped them be successful in their roles.

The number one quality that the top-rated CEOs emphasized was honesty. Employees respond especially well to leaders who are completely transparent about what goes on behind closed doors. This means that when you're looking for someone to take over executive duties at your company, you should make complete honesty during the application process a top priority. At the first sign that a candidate might be exaggerating their past work history, for example, you should stop considering them a contender for the position.

Another characteristic that the CEOs valued highly was the ability to receive feedback. Highly rated CEOs take employees' opinions seriously and are willing to change procedures and requirements if the majority of employees feel that they should be changed. If a candidate seems especially defensive and unwilling to take suggestions during the interview process, they aren't likely to do any better when they have a whole company to run.
