3 challenges of in-house recruiting

Companies that manage their recruiting efforts in-house often do so in an effort to keep costs down. What they don't realize, however, is that unless they envision only sporadically hiring for non-specialist roles, their internal team will quickly run into obstacles that can cost them well beyond any savings they had hoped to capture.

While these challenges affect both companies who choose to handle the recruiting process with their current HR staff as well as those who augment their staff with full-time recruiters, they are much more pronounced in waylaying departments that rely on their existing staff.

  • Resources: Adding recruiting responsibilities on top of HR staff's existing workload ties up valuable time and resources that could be used elsewhere. As important staff members turn their attention toward advertising open jobs, reviewing applications and creating shortlists, their ability to perform at a high level in their official role will no doubt suffer, potentially dragging profitability down as well.
  • Industry knowledge: To hire top talent, your company must be able to first separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff and identify those a-players amidst a sea of average applications. In-house recruiters may receive a brief from a hiring manager and a job description against which to base hiring decisions, but that is rarely enough to ensure they don't miss a strong candidate and shortlist those who won't make a good fit. Third-party recruiters, on the other hand, offer this level of experience by providing specialists who have been hiring in niche areas for years, developing their eye for industry-specific talent.
  • Candidate experience: As much as the hiring process is about a company having a chance to evaluate potential hires, it is also an opportunity for talent to get a sense of the culture of the company they are considering. Just as a bumpy, ragtag hiring process can inspire doubt in a candidate's mind, a smooth, professional recruiting approach can instill confidence that his or her expectations will be met on the job. In today's competitive hiring environment, these first impressions are especially crucial.

Working with a professional executive search firm can help your company overcome these challenges and bring championship-level talent to your team quickly and cost-effectively. To see some of the positions YES Partners has placed successfully, click here!
