Finding a CEO who can stay focused despite discouragement

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, it does appear that some of the pessimism about the amount of time that your CEO tenure may last at a single company is at least somewhat justified.

This might be a cultural moment that makes CEOs and higher levels of executives feel increasingly nervous about their ability to survive as a professional in the modern world at one single company.

This article asserts that CEOs in the U.S. are changing companies at a rather high rate, and that 2013 is on track to see the most of these changes in recent years.

So how can any candidate hope to weather out the storm and assure shareholders that they are starting a lasting relationship with the company that's interviewing them? There are always unforeseen factors that could drive a candidate away, but when it comes to the faculties of the individual person, it might simply be down to a simple mastery of focus.

That could be elusive for even the best of us. But a Harvard Business Review article written by Daniel Goleman that looks at another form of research, in which the attention spans of executives don't exactly get a good rap.

"Alarmingly, research suggests that as people rise through the ranks and gain power, their ability to perceive and maintain personal connections tends to suffer a sort of psychic attrition," Goleman writes in reference to another psychological study.

With the help of an executive recruitment firm, the attempt to find the right person for your company's culture can give you a chance to invest in a longstanding relationship rather than a one-off.
