How HR departments can retain employees more efficiently

In today's less homogenous work environments, employees are being asked to become both more independent and more interdependent all while adhering to a common plan, making it increasingly difficult for HR professionals to figure out a way to connect with employees on an individual level and promote engagement.

HR departments are under increasing pressure to become more efficient so they can free up the resources to tackle more difficult responsibilities. In an article for ERE Media, Jean Martin, talent solutions architect and HR expert at CEB, a best practice insight and technology company, says that while efficiency has become paramount, the size and complexity of firms and the need for managers to collaborate with so many people is in fact slowing the pace for HR managers in many large companies.

To make recruiting more efficient, Martin says companies should look closely at their workflow, identifying and removing hidden roadblocks that can stall the hiring process. Working with a retained executive search firm can help relieve HR departments of this burden, as it can use its expertise to find and screen potential candidates through a streamlined process.

One key to retaining talented employees is to make sure that they are able to develop new abilities and areas of expertise that the organization values in addition to their current skill sets. Rather than encouraging this development by urging employees to "own" their career paths, HR professionals who work closely with employees can better help them identify ways to develop skills the company is looking to hire for. Then, when the time comes to make a hiring decision, HR will be able to target the right internal candidates for open jobs rather than using passive channels such as job boards.
