How to skip the time-wasting first interview

The hiring process often involves multiple rounds of interviews, and while the way they play out may vary from company to company, the typical pattern looks something like this. First, HR confirms that the candidate has what it takes to fill the position. Then, in the follow-up interview, the hiring specialists determine who among their narrowed group of applicants is really the best for the role.

If these two interviews sound a little similar, that's one of the key problems with the multiple-round approach. If  the second interview is where the "real" testing takes place, why is the first one even necessary? Unnecessary interviews waste both the company's and the candidate's time.

Imagine how much stronger the decision will be if the candidate is already known to be a good fit. By feeling more confident about a person before that interview begins, companies can proceed to the more essential second stage faster, and also shorten the search and response process overall. This way, candidates will also hear back promptly.

This March, Laszlo Bock of Google released some excerpts from his book "Work Rules!" on LinkedIn. One of them specifically addresses why job interviews are often ineffective.

"Most of what we think is 'interviewing' is actually the pursuit of confirmation bias," he writes. "Most interviews are a waste of time because 99.4 percent of the time is spent trying to confirm whatever impression the interviewer formed in the first ten seconds. 'Tell me about yourself.' 'What is your greatest weakness?' 'What is your greatest strength?' Worthless."

How do you stage more productive interviews? YES Partners will remove the guesswork from the process and help you get straight to the more meaningful parts of the hiring process. A global executive search firm helps you locate the most productive candidates earlier on with a well-paced methodology. How? Because all candidates have been interviewed and already assessed for the very specific opening the search firm is tasked to fill. This alone saves tremendous time for the hiring and 'interviewing' team.
