The myths about job boards

In theory, a job board should be the perfect way to find a qualified candidate for your company: you set up your post, and have a list of great candidates within a day. The reality, however, is usually far messier, despite how easy it is to use these resources.

Job boards don't guarantee that the possible hires you discover will be the very best fit, or that they will fit your company's culture and needs for that specific opening you have. What's more, it's highly unlikely they will produce the kind of results you want within just one day. It might seem like a low-risk activity, but if it leads to wasted time, then your company will have to work harder to make up for it later.

Even if a post does bring responses, it will take work to sift through them to find the ones your company actually wants to take seriously. The folks who apply are very often not the people a company is looking for, and companies tend to get inundated by under (or over) qualified candidates. Some job boards assign a ranking on posted openings (example: this job is 'on fire'), but user companies then usually get frustrated with the hundreds of (non-qualified) applicants they hear from.

Businesses should also consider the inconvenience that job boards pose for applicants as well as their own HR staff. They have to rely on information that might not be up to date or relevant, all while trusting in people they haven't met and don't interact with directly.

Hiring-manages can waste time by interviewing unqualified candidates. This 'waiting period' again makes them less interested in the posted opening.
